AI in Revenue Cycle: Why Trust is a Barrier to Transformation
Artificial intelligence is the future of revenue cycle management. However, many organizations still remain cautious about fully integrating AI into core revenue cycle workflows. The hesitation is not rooted in a lack of openness to innovation. It is rooted in trust.
As Terry Reinsager, Chief Revenue Cycle Officer at Revology, puts it: “Revenue cycle operators are control freaks. We are type A personalities. That mindset will be our biggest challenge to adoption.”
That focus on control comes from managing workflows where small mistakes can have significant financial consequences. For AI to gain meaningful adoption, it must earn the confidence of those who will rely on it every day.
Many RCM leaders have experienced automation that created burdens and came with as many challenges as it solved. According to Terry, “we were told years ago when robotic processing bots came to be that’s going to solve all the problems. And what we found is it created a lot of new challenges of trusting the bots. It couldn’t make decisions without step-by-step instructions behind the scenes and maintenance was a nightmare.”
Experiences like that are shaping how organizations evaluate AI today. Revenue cycle leaders are not simply asking whether AI can automate tasks faster. They are evaluating whether the technology can provide enough visibility for teams to trust it in high-stakes workflows.
Industry organizations such as the Healthcare Financial Management Association have highlighted AI’s growing potential to improve operational efficiency and reduce administrative burden across the revenue cycle. At the same time, the American Hospital Association has emphasized that responsible AI adoption requires transparency, governance, and human oversight.
Even as AI is poised to transform revenue cycle management, adoption will not accelerate simply because the technology exists. It will accelerate when revenue cycle leaders trust the technology enough to integrate it into daily workflows and long-term strategy.
Organizations that build that trust early will be better positioned to create more intelligent, scalable, and autonomous revenue cycle operations over time.
